Arcad Research projects Cereals in Africa News & events Fonio workshop held in Niger
A workshop on fonio was held in Niamey, Niger on December 09-11, 2010. It was attended by 25 participants (scientists, producers, NGO) from West Africa and France.
The participants discussed most aspects of fonio cultivation and use, from genetic diversity to production and market issues. Conclusions were drawn on the research areas needed to develop and promote this underutilized cereal (evaluation of genetic resources, improvement potential, crop management and post-harvest technologies). A network of potential partners was built to facilitate contacts and create a thinking synergy.
The workshop was supported by CIRAD, IRD, Université Abdou Moumouni (Niger), IRAG (Guinea) and ARCAD. It benefited from local (the daily newspaper Le Sahel, Niger) and institutional communication.
